Abstract:
Following the sequence of severe storm systems that struck Portugal, a breach occurred
in the Casais Levee, associated with the Mondego River, on February 11, 2026. As a
consequence of this event, the resulting flood wave caused the erosion of the engineered
embankments at the north abutment of Viaduct C over the Mondego River on the A1
motorway (km 191+200), leading to the collapse of the transition slab and the pavement.
This paper describes the emergency intervention and the geotechnical assessments
carried out on this embankment with the aim of restoring traffic and returning Portugal’s
most important roadway to its normal service levels. The work presents the geological
framework, the investigation campaign based on CPTu and SPT tests, and the stability
and settlement analyses that validated the adopted repair solution.
