| dc.description.abstract |
Timber frame structural systems can be often found in Portuguese buildings constructed before the XIX century. One of this type of structural systems is called Tabique and it is constituted by a timber frame structure filled with mortar (e.g. earth-based or lime) and used as self-supporting internal partition walls. Tabique walls were part of the building system called Gaiolas Pombalinas used for the reconstruction of Lisbon after de earthquake of 1755. Although these walls performed as non-structural elements in some cases, due mainly to the deterioration of structural elements, they can have at some moment a significant contribution to the structural stability of the building. The aim of the paper was to evaluate the enhancement of the capacity of Tabique to perform as shear walls by applying a simple and sustainable
strengthening solution based on the application of wood-based panels to their surfaces. |
